Frequently Asked Questions

Which session package is right for me?

If you’re looking for mostly posed photos of your family and kids, or if you have older kids, the mini session is often all you need. If you have younger kids who might need breaks and extra time during the session, or you want to have time for a lot of candid/lifestyle shots, the full session will give the flexibility you need!

I only need a couple of photos for my holiday card, do you have an even smaller package?

I will hold holiday session days a few times a year, with a special package designed for those who only want a few photos. Keep an eye on my blog and my facebook page for those announcements!

Can my pet be included in the photos?

Absolutely! I love animals.

What should I wear?

Deciding on outfits can be one of the hardest parts of family photos! Here are some tips:

  • Choose two or three colors and use those to build your outfits. For my own family photos, I usually start by finding one colorful piece I really love, whether it’s a flower-print dress for my daughter or a plaid shirt for my son. Then, I use the colors from that item to find pieces for the rest of us.
  • Don’t be matchy-matchy. Coordinate rather than match! Choose colors that look well together rather than outfits in all the same color.
  • Accessories and layers are awesome. They’re a great way to add a pop of color or texture.
  • Look at the colors in your home. This is where you’ll be displaying your photos, so make sure the colors you choose are complimentary.
  • Keep the location in mind. This is true for both style of dress and selecting colors.
  • Lay everything out ahead of time. This will help you notice anything that stands out or clashes too much.

If you’re still not sure, I’m happy to provide personal input either ahead of time or even when we get there if you bring extra outfits with you! Google and Pinterest are FULL of ideas too if you’re really stuck.

What exactly is a themed session?

It can be anything you want! While a typical family session is pretty simple — your family at a park or other location, with a blanket and maybe a chair thrown in as props — a themed session can be as extravagant as you dream up! Whether you want to set up a tea party for your child or capture them in their element as a gymnast, we can work together to make your vision a reality.

Do I have to have all of the props I want for my session?

No. We’ll work together to come up with the design (or you can leave it all to me!). Depending on the props you’re looking for, I may have them already or be willing to purchase them to have on hand for future sessions. If not, you can find them on your own, or give me a budget to work with and I’ll do the rest.

When are senior sessions scheduled?

Senior sessions typically take place in late summer or fall of your senior year (if a photo is needed for yearbook), or in the spring of your senior year. If a photo is needed for yearbook, be sure your session is scheduled to take place at least three weeks before your school’s deadline.

What should I wear?

Senior photos should show off your personality and style! Here are a few tips:

  • Bring outfits in multiple styles (casual, dressy, etc.)
  • Choose solids over patterns
  • Avoid wording on your clothing unless it’s meaningful to you (college name, for example)
  • Use accessories to bring in pops of color! Scarves, jewelry, and brightly-colored shoes are all great ways to add unexpected color
  • Make sure your clothing is clean and unwrinkled

What about hair and makeup?

I highly recommend having your hair and makeup professionally done. If you’re confident in your abilities and want to do your own hair and makeup, follow these tips:

  • No mineral makeup or SPF in your foundation – both can come across shiny on camera
  • Use an HD setting powder to help your makeup last for the entire session
  • Don’t worry too much about blemishes – they’re easier to retouch when they’re not caked in makeup
  • Lipstick can always add some fun to your photos! If you don’t typically wear lipstick, I recommend a tinted lip balm to add a tiny pop of color so your lips won’t appear washed out in photos

What else should I bring?

If you have any special hobbies like sports, musical instruments, reading, photography, etc., it can be really fun to incorporate props from those hobbies in your photos!

Can my mom / sibling / best friend / dog be included in a photo or two?

Absolutely!
